Liberty Arts Magnet School is creating an outdoor education space designed to both enhance student learning and foster a connection to nature.
The space is located on existing land to the north of the building (taking up about 3,750 square feet of space). It will include a shelter house, performance space, gardens, benches, outdoor chalkboards, a music/chime wall, STEAM wall, rock wall, relaxation station and spaces to do artwork.
There will be areas for reading, writing, music, STEAM, physical education, environmental science, social-emotional learning, relaxation, art, performance and play. The space will benefit Liberty students, as well as families in the neighborhood.
The anticipated completion date is the spring of 2027.
The space will also provide students with the chance to engage with nature. The benefits of outdoor time are well-documented and include:
Improved Physical Health: Outdoor play and exploration promote physical activity, which is essential for children’s growth and well-being. Exposure to fresh air and sunlight helps strengthen the immune system and fosters healthy habits that can last a lifetime.
Enhanced Mental Health: Nature has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety, and attention difficulties. The outdoor environment provides a calm and nurturing space for students to unwind, fostering improved emotional regulation and resilience.
Increased Academic Engagement: Outdoor learning stimulates curiosity and creativity. Studies show that children learn better when they can connect concepts to real-world experiences. The outdoor space will offer dynamic learning opportunities in science, art, and even social studies, engaging students in ways that traditional classrooms cannot.
Stronger Environmental Stewardship: By spending more time outdoors, students develop a deeper respect for the environment and an understanding of the importance of sustainability and conservation.
The project is expected to cost about $45,000. The school has applied for grants and is seeking sponsors to help fund the initiative. If interested, please contact Joanna Walt at 740-816-8839 or jwalt@spartan.limacityschools.org.
